Associate Curator of Woody Plants (Horticulture - Position Application Number: H-1492):
Summary of Responsibilities:
The Associate Curator of Woody Plants evaluates, develops, promotes, and facilitates the stewardship of the hardy tree and shrub collections of The New York Botanical Garden. He/She assists with the preparation of selected publications, profiles and printed material regarding the woody plant collections. Works closely with the Director of Arboretum and Grounds and the Integrated Pest Management Manager to develop and implement best management practices for the care of the woody plant collections. Works closely with Plant Records and Institutional Mapping staff to provide inventories, assessments, and profiles of the woody plant collections. Gives tours and makes presentations. Prepares and gives plant walks for students in the School of Professional Horticulture. Assists Horticulture staff in the planning and execution of all aspects of major exhibitions, including creating interpretation and giving special tours. Works closely with Capital Projects and Operations staff to facilitate construction, repair, and project work. Works closely with all Garden departments to facilitate, coordinate, and implement work for Garden Events, Public Services activities and Educational Services Participates in institutional planning efforts and performs other tasks as required.
Requirements:
· Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Forestry or related field.
· Minimum 3 years experience working with diverse collections of woody plants in an arboretum, public garden or similar institution.
· Demonstrated knowledge of a wide variety of hardy woody plants.
· Excellent communication abilities, including speaking, writing and presentation skills.
· Excellent computer skills.
