Eagle Eyed Above the Ladies’ Border
Pat Gonzalez is a wildlife photographer and Office Aide at The New York Botanical Garden.
During my lunch break on Wednesday, September 20, I was at the Ladies’ Border specifically to film all the ruby-throated hummingbirds. I happened to look up and spotted what I believed to be a peregrine falcon. As I wasn’t sure, the plan was to film a substantial amount of footage, then play it back on my large monitor at home. At one point, I lost sight of it. I found it again, or at least I thought I did, then put the camera back up to my eye. Instead of the mystery raptor, I got the shock of my life when I saw this beautiful bald eagle slowly circling. During all my time at NYBG, I’ve never been lucky enough to be around when one of these graceful birds visits.
I want to encourage visitors and all of my colleagues to get out on the Garden grounds with your cameras before the cold weather sets in. Visit the Ladies’ Border, Native Plant Garden, Wetlands Trail, and other hot spots. Take full advantage of the fact that you’re in a major New York City wildlife hot spot.
And above all….
Keep watching the skies!
