FAQs About SHLD and BPSS

  • The Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision (BPSS) is part of the New York State Department of Education and oversees and monitors non-degree granting proprietary schools in New York State. BPSS’s mission is to ensure that the overall educational quality of the programs offered provide students with the necessary skills to secure meaningful employment and to protect students’ fiscal interests while attending proprietary schools. BPSS licenses/registers proprietary schools and credentials school faculty to ensure that consistent education standards are enacted.

  • The School of Horticulture and Landscape Design (SHLD) is one of NYBG’s BPSS certified Private Career School, and includes certificates in Horticulture and Landscape Design. The School for Professional Horticulture, NYBG’s other BPSS certified school, is a full-time two-year program specializing in Horticulture.

  • By enrolling in NYBG’s School for Horticulture and Landscape Design (SHLD), you will be learning from the industries’ top professionals in a variety of fields. The Continuing Education staff and faculty also offer tailored academic and professional advising to enrolled students. The classes in a BPSS licensed program have a staggered refund policy which differs from the policy for classes non-BPSS licensed program.

  • The Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision (BPSS) regulates the School of Horticulture of Landscape Design, comprised of two Continuing Education certificate programs; Horticulture and Landscape Design. BPSS requires students to enroll in these certificate programs and monitors services that help support your education outcomes. BPSS also requires that we verify students have a high school diploma or equivalency upon enrollment.

  • The Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision (BPSS) mandates that schools collect a fee from students when they register in licensed certificate programs. This $100 fee allows schools to offer a more flexible required refund policy, along with additional services including advising and career development support.
