Plant Diversity: The Root of Biodiversity and Climate Resilience

September–November 22

Ongoing | Online

At NYBG, We Look to Plants for the Answers in Solving the Biodiversity & Climate Change Crises

The world is coming together during Climate Week, COP16 and COP29 to tackle the unprecedented biodiversity and climate crises. According to the United Nations, Climate change is the single largest health threat facing humanity through its impact on air pollution, disease, extreme weather, forced displacement, and lack of sufficient food. Climate change is one of the main drivers of biodiversity loss, contributing to one quarter of plant and animal species being threatened with extinction. Biodiversity loss joins climate change as one of the largest threats facing humanity.

However, we have hope in turning the tide on these dual crises. By protecting and restoring nature, we can halt biodiversity loss and begin to rebuild healthy ecosystems. Biodiverse ecosystems are resilient and a key climate solution. According to The Nature Conservancy, natural climate solutions can reduce emissions by one-third to mitigate the worst impacts of climate change. NYBG has been advancing plant research and conservation over its 133-year history and leverages its expertise and collections to address the biodiversity and climate crises. Follow along as NYBG Science shares how our work, from nature-based solutions and regenerative agriculture to the roles of Indigenous people, advance solutions for this pivotal time.

What Are These Global Events?

  • Climate Week NYC is the largest annual climate event of its kind, bringing together over 600 events and activities across the City of New York – in person, hybrid and online. Each year, business leaders, political change makers, local decision takers and civil society representatives of all ages and backgrounds, from all over the world, gather to drive the transition, speed up progress, and champion change that is already happening. Make sure to join NYBG’s own climate week event in person or online.

  • COP16 is the 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties for biodiversity. COP16 takes place from October 21 through November 1 in Cali, Colombia. COP15 was centered around the Convention on Biological Diversity, a 1992 international agreement on how nations should use and protect the world’s natural resources. COP16 will focus on the implementation of the Biodiversity Plan (Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework). Follow along for updates as NYBG attends this important conference.

  • COP29 is the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Held annually, the conference convenes delegates from around the world to negotiate goals for combating climate change and limit Earth’s warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Stay up to date on how NYBG’s work on natural solutions helps to solve the climate crisis.
