For as long as I can remember, I’ve been what some might call an “eco-warrior,” from picking up even the most questionable of litter, to promoting sustainable practices at both of my high schools. It is a very thankless job, and welcomes strange looks from others, but it’s imperative that restorative practice is done consistently, especially with how quickly the environment falls to detriment. And while the city is full of potential, a lot of it is rarely realized—let alone utilized—and it’s rather difficult for someone with passions that surround ecology to secure a relevant position. On top of that, most internships and entry level positions are usually only available for high school students or very seasonal. With this in mind, I had spent the last leg of my position at a lab searching for a job where like-minded individuals communed; I knew I’d thrive in an environment like Bronx Green-Up.

Upon joining the team, I was introduced to new concepts of composting (i.e. tumbling, bin system) and developed some neat carpentry skills, though I’m no tradesman. I also developed a voice for community outreach, aiding projects like building a simple seven-bin compost system for Padre Plaza, or facilitating our Harvest Fair festival at New Roots Community Farm! These endeavors were humbling and educational, allowing me to learn from local voices in the ecological field, as well as networking with partner organizations like the Bronx River Alliance. I’m grateful to have worked with such a patient, supportive, and communicative team.
