Explore the diversity of oaks (Quercus spp.) from across North America, Europe, and Asia in The Coleman and Susan Burke Oak Collection, which features towering specimens that predate the founding of NYBG in 1891 and young trees planted for the dedication of the collection in 2022. In spring, marvel at the intricate detail of oak leaves as they emerge from their winter buds and enjoy the flowering of native shrubs planted as companions to the oaks. In summer compare the variety of leaf shapes exhibited by the cherry bark oak (Quercus pagoda), willow oak (Quercus phellos), and the daimyo oak (Quercus dentata). In fall, search the ground for the massive spiky acorns of the bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa) or the smooth chocolate-brown acorns of white oak (Quercus alba). In winter, take in long views of the adjacent Magnolia Collection and Thain Family Forest from seat walls made from a special New York bluestone and artfully integrated into the site’s bedrock outcroppings.
