A Few of Her Favorite Things: Sara Kate Gillingham-Ryan

Sara Kate Gillingham-Ryan, is more than the founding editor of the home cooking website The Kitchn. She is a cooking inspiration. The Kitchn was born out of Apartment Therapy, a website started by Sara Kate’s husband Maxwell whose stated mission is to “Save the world, one room at a time.”

In The Kitchn, (mission: Inspiring cooks, nourishing homes), experienced cooks and newbies alike swap recipes, tips, tricks, and tales in a chatty, well edited and lovingly curated forum shaped by Sara Kate and her devoted team. But Sara Kate’s world doesn’t revolve entirely around the kitchen. She’s also a passionate home gardener, a fact that comes out in Sara Kate’s list of her “Favorite Things” for holiday gift giving.

For the Gardener
I probably had 10 pairs of cheap pruners before buying myself a pair of Felco No. 2s. This is the gift I give any gardener when I find out they don’t own a good pruner.

For Kids
It’s really difficult to find a good-looking hat for kids. This one made of braided paper keeps the sun out of my daughter’s face and makes her feel like the little farmer she wishes to be.

For the Host or Hostess
I usually don’t like frilly, antique-looking knick-knacks but I absolutely adore funky old (or old looking) salt cellars. Also, there’s something about this orange; it makes me imagine the taste of a perfect wedge of citrus with a pinch of flakey salt. Yum.

For Me
When I’ve been working in the garden, my hands are a mess so I need to instantly slather my hands in a healing salve. This stuff almost makes up for my not wearing gloves as often as I should.
