Holiday Train Show Locomotive“I kept seeing the soldier ride around and around the show, but was afraid that if I tried to get him off the train I might make it jump the tracks.”

From now until December 17, our visitors will be sharing their fondest memories from 20 years of the Holiday Train Show–some of them touching, some comical, and every one of them cherished. Come back to Plant Talk each day for a new story, which you can see after the jump along with a feature on one of the many replica New York City landmarks on display in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory–the Guggenheim Museum, Yankee Stadium, the Empire State Building and more.

As a bonus, read on to find out how you can win a Family Four-Pack of Holiday Train Show tickets for yourself!

Toy Soldier

I’ve been coming to the train show with my children since they were babies; they are now ten, 13, and 15 years old.

When my 13-year-old son Kyle was little, he used to carry around green, plastic toy soldiers. One year, before I could stop him, he put a soldier on one of the trains (a little lady-bug train). I kept seeing the soldier ride around and around the show, but was afraid that if I tried to get him off the train I might make it jump the tracks. Not surprisingly, that soldier stayed at the Botanical Gardens.

I always wondered who eventually found him, and how they thought he had gotten to be a part of the show!

The Flatiron Building

The Flatiron BuildingOriginally called the Fuller Building, what came to be known as “The Flatiron” was designed by Chicago’s Daniel H. Burnham, and serves as a milestone in New York skyscraper design. The triangular shape is the result of Broadway’s diagonal route through Manhattan’s street grid, causing a rounded apex at 23rd Street that measures only 6 feet across.

It was registered as a National Historic Landmark in 1989, and serves as a revered representative of the Beaux Arts movement.
