This was the first year that we took our train-obsessed boys–then ages four and two–to see the Holiday Train Show. They were in heaven! It was a wonderful day!

St. Patrick’s Cathedral
This glorious structure was designed by James Renwick, Jr., considered one of the most successful American architects of the nineteenth century. St. Patrick’s is the largest Neo-Gothic-style Roman Catholic cathedral in the United States. The Catholic Church bought the land in 1828, intending to use it as a cemetery, but abandoned the plan when gravediggers hit rock just below the surface.
Work on the Cathedral began in 1858, but was suspended during the Civil War. After many gradual additions it was finally completed in 1888, and has since proven both Renwick’s masterpiece and one of the most grandiose buildings in Manhattan.
