This Weekend: The Summer Harvest Festival

Our long-time adventure in multinational growing once again comes to fruition this weekend, which is a big hint to bring the kids along if you’re planning a visit. We’ll be hanging out in the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden with our talented team of global gardeners for the Summer Harvest Festival, celebrating the herbs, fruits, and vegetables that form the backbones of cuisines from Ireland, South Korea, the Caribbean, and more.
While you’re meeting the gardeners who have carefully tended these plots for so long, we’ll have activities to explore throughout Saturday and Sunday, including garden passports, cultural crafts, and pickle sampling. And not many people would pass up garden-fresh pickles, in my experience.
Elsewhere in the Garden, our Wild Medicine exhibition continues its summer run with an ever changing display in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory‘s Italian Renaissance Garden planting, as well as a renowned collection of classic herbals in the Mertz Library (see below for our ASL-friendly tour happening Saturday). And with the weather playing nice, I’d suggest setting aside some time to daydream your way along the Forest trails, too—the canopy is a cloud of green right now.

Tour Wild Medicine in the Conservatory
In the Conservatory, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Guides throughout the exhibition help bring the stories of Wild Medicine to life and guide your experience. Learn about featured medicinal plants and their cultural significance, the origin of medicinal gardens, and more.
Library Gallery Tour: The Renaissance Herbal with ASL interpreter – 12:30 p.m.
Experience this compelling exhibition showcasing rare manuscripts and beautifully illustrated books produced in the medieval and Renaissance eras, demonstrates the evolving role plants have played in medicine and history since antiquity.
Music and Dance of the Italian Renaissance
In the Ross Hall, 1 and 3 p.m.
Enjoy a rich repertoire of music and dance of the Italian Renaissance period presented by members of Early Music New York and The New York Historical Dance Company.
Home Gardening Demonstration: The Green Kitchen
In the Home Gardening Center – 2 p.m.
A successful vegetable garden should be productive throughout the season. Join us to learn how to create a bountiful and beautiful vegetable garden. The discussion will include “garden-to-table” talk on how to prepare your feast.

Outdoor Nature Exploration at the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden

Explore nature and plant science through seasonally changing programs, themed galleries, and hands-on activities in the William and Lynda Steere Discovery Center as well as through outdoor exploration of the 12-acre Adventure Garden.
Mario Batali’s Kitchen Gardens

April 6 – October 11, 2013; 1:30 p.m. – 6 p.m.
Kids can explore with Mario’s Menu Mystery game, featuring favorite vegetables and herbs from nine of his restaurants’ kitchens, including Otto and Del Posto.

Cooking Demonstrations

May 11 – October 11, 2013: Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays: 2 & 4 p.m.
From late spring into early fall, learn to cook up flavorful new recipes using garden-fresh ingredients, twice a day on Wednesdays and weekends in the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden.
Global Gardens Summer Harvest Celebration

August 17 & 18, 2013, 1:30 – 5:30 p.m.
Celebrate the summer harvest season of our five Global Gardens. Earn stamps in your passport by exploring each of the Global Gardens: meet the Global Gardeners, play garden games, create cultural crafts, or sample pickles. Plants and imaginations grow at the Howell Family Garden, where kids are allowed–no, encouraged!–to play in the dirt. Display gardens such as the Global Gardens and the Breakfast Bowl, and daily activities delight and inspire.
