Wind down the summer this Labor Day holiday at the Garden—we’ll be open through the long weekend! Come view the blockbuster FRIDA KAHLO: Art, Garden, Life exhibition and check out the associated programs that are sure to make your experience that much more exciting—from live music and dance by Mexico Beyond Mariachi to screenings of films that highlight the rich culture of Mexico, to Frida-inspired cooking demonstrations in the Family Garden, there’s something for just about anyone to enjoy.
While you’re here, take part in one of our many tours happening throughout the Garden, led by experts in the field. You can learn about the jewel-like plants on the Rock Garden Tour, or explore our historic Conservatory on the Aquatic Plant Tour, or just meander and lose yourself in the Garden, because you never know what may discover! Rock Garden Tour–11 a.m.
Meet at the Reflecting Pool in the Leon Levy Visitor Center
The Rock Garden is a three-acre oasis complete with a pond, waterfall, and alpine plants from six of the seven continents. Join us for a walking tour to see and learn more about these jewel-like plants.
Native Plant Garden Tour–12:30 p.m.
Meet at the Reflecting Pool at the Leon Levy Visitor Center
Join a tour guide for an insider’s view of the newly designed Native Plant Garden. Enjoy a mosaic of nearly 100,000 native trees, wildflowers, ferns and grasses designed to flourish in every season.

Mexico Beyond Mariachi, a collective of professional teaching artist, musicians, and dancers, creates a bridge that connects audiences to the living traditions of Mexico through a musical journey that begins with the conquest and leads to the present day. The New York Metro area performance group has been seen by more than one million people over the last 10 years.

Rated R) (English) Frida chronicles the life Frida Kahlo shared unflinchingly and openly with Diego Rivera as the young couple took the art world by storm. Frida Kahlo lived a bold and uncompromising life as a political, artistic, and sexual revolutionary.

Today’s Feature: Tercera Llamada/Last Call (Francisco Franco, Mexico, 2013, 92 minutes) In this comedic ensemble piece, a Mexican theater company is in rehearsals for a production of Caligula by Albert Camus. Things aren’t going well: the lead actress is furious with the nuerotic and depressd director, the lead actor is having panic attacks, and an older actor can’t memorize his lines. It’s going to take a miracle for the play to open…winner of multiple prizes-including the audience award-at the Guadalajara International Film Festival, Last Call is the kind of character driven comedy that recalls the early films of Almodovar.

Explore the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, an acre of plants under glass, with one of the Garden’s tour guides. Take an ecotour around the world through 11 distinct habitats, including two types of rain forest, deserts of the Americas and of Africa, and aquatic and carnivorous plant displays.

Today’s Feature: Los Insolitos Peces Gato/The Amazing Catfish (Claudia Sainte-Luce, Mexico, 2013, 89 minutes) A heartwarming tale of two unique women who bond while recuperating in a hospital. Martha, a mother of four rambunctious and imaginative children, finds solace when she meets a younger woman, Claudia, and the two quickly build a strong relationship. When Martha invites Claudia to live with her family, Claudia unwittingly takes on the responsibility of becoming a surrogate mother to Martha’s children.

Garden beds are filled with plants featured in the favorite recipes of the chefs from Mario Batali’s restaurants. Kids can explore the gardens to solve Mario’s Menu Mystery game.
Dig! Plant! Grow! Salad Days–1:30-6 p.m.
In the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden
Plants and imaginations grow at the Howell Family Garden, where kids are allowed!—no, encouraged!—to play in the dirt. Display gardens, such as the Global Gardens and the Bean Tunnel or Salad Bowl, and daily interactive gardening activities delight and inspire. Drop-in activities end at 5:30 p.m.
Cooking with Frida–2 & 4 p.m.
In the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden

Hands-on activities in the Edible Academy’s Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden bring together children and their families to experience the colors, textures, smells, and tastes of Frida Kahlo’s Mexican kitchen. Cooking demonstrations feature recipes inspired by those Frida served to family and friends, using nutritious, garden-based ingredients. Visitors can explore and tend to the plant staples of Mexican cuisine growing throughout the Family Garden: beans, tomatoes, peppers, chiles, herbs, and more!

Everett Children’s Adventure Garden

Visit the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden to experience the inspiration Frida Kahlo found in the natural world that can be seen and appreciated in her artwork. Throughout the Adventure Garden investigate plants and animals growing and living in New York City, using your senses as well as scientific tools to discover your own creative muse.
