These colorful buds are commonly known as sneezeweed, but don’t worry! They won’t be especially rough on your allergies. The name comes from this plant’s former use in manufacturing snuff powder.

July is just around the corner, and the grounds continue to impress us each day with new bursts of color. The Groundbreakers exhibit continues to bring visitors on a journey through the history of great American gardens, and now is the perfect time to see the parts of the Garden designed by these extraordinary women.
This Saturday will be the last chance to enjoy one of Debbie Becker’s famous Bird Walks until they resume in September! Our winged friends are enjoying the sunny days even more than we are, and there are a wide variety of species to observe. Enjoy a walk through the grounds and keep an eye out for cardinals, bluejays, robins, or even one of our resident Red-tailed Hawks! That’s just one event in a full weekend of programs. Click through to see what’s happening for all ages at the Garden this weekend!
Tomorrow is your chance to support educational nutrition programs for children when you buy nutritious food for yourself! Our friends at Whole Foods Market® will donate 5% of their daily net sales on June 25 to the programs and activities of NYBG’s Edible Academy and the award-winning Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden.
NYBG has always worked to reconnect children with nature, with a special focus on where their food comes from. At the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden, kids engage in hands-on gardening activities that teach them the benefits of naturally grown vegetables, fruits and herbs. The Edible Academy includes plans for a new, state-of-the-art building that will serve as the hub for edible education at NYBG.
Tomorrow you can help us get closer to that reality when you shop at any one of dozens of Whole Foods Markets across New York and New Jersey. Click through for the full list of participating locations and find the closest one to you!
Happy Friday! Looks like we are in store for a beautiful weekend. The humidity has abated, the temperature will not be near the highs of this week, and the Garden grounds promise to be simply stunning!
After the success of last weekend’s Big Backyard BBQ & Music Festival, this weekend sees a return to our scheduled programming surrounding Groundbreakers and what’s in bloom. The 2014 Spring Festival Series has officially come to an end—after all, it’s not spring anymore. Saturday is the first official day of summer, and the longest day of the year! Where better to take advantage of the all that sunlight than at NYBG? Come enjoy tours of the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden while it is still at peak form! Read on for details about this weekend’s programs for all ages.
This Friday, June 20, the Garden will host the inaugural symposium of the new Humanities Institute within the LuEsther T. Mertz Library! This exciting new initiative will further establish the academic role of the world’s largest, most comprehensive botanical and horticultural library.
Beginning June 18, visitors to the Garden will have a chance to bring home some healthy and delicious treats from the NYBG Greenmarket! Each Wednesday through November 26, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., fresh food and produce will be available near the Garden’s Mosholu Gate from local vendors, in a collaboration between NYBG and Greenmarket, a program of GrowNYC. There is no reason not to come enjoy the beautiful summer scenery while you get some shopping done!
Thursday, June 26, is the first of only three very special Jazz Age Garden Parties here at NYBG! This summer, we’re whisking you away to the world of Groundbreakers with the classic jazz of the Roaring Twenties—and, of course, specialty cocktails to set the mood. With only three chances to spend a cool summer evening in the glitzy glamor of the Garden, don’t waste a moment reserving your tickets now.
The season’s unbeatable music comes courtesy of Michael Arenella & His Dreamland Orchestra. Conductor, composer, musician, and singer Michael Arenella and his seven-piece band are the premier Jazz Age dance band in New York, and the originators of the celebrated Governor’s Island Lawn Party. Now he’s bringing his swinging style to NYBG! Dance lessons will be taking place from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m., so you can dance the Charleston and other styles under the stars.
The Rose Garden Celebration kicks off tomorrow! And without a moment to spare—the roses are already at 60% of peak color as of today. Don’t miss the blooms or the entertainment. Click through for full details on performances, tours, food and drink vendors, and expert-led Q&A sessions. You can even make your own watercolor painting! Please note that there will be no film screenings or performances in Ross Hall this weekend. You’ll find the entertainment outdoors! Book a special festival ticket now for a fun-filled weekend in the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden.
This weekend only is also Dig! Plant! Grow!: Global Gardens Spring Harvest Celebration. Bring your kids on a culinary journey around the world!
