Help us kick off a new season of FRIDA KAHLO: Art Garden, Life this weekend at NYBG with a festive celebration of Mexican independence! This Wednesday, September 16, is Mexico’s Independence Day. On September 19 & 20, come to the Garden for ¡Viva México! An Independence Day Celebration,with two days of live music and dance, whimsical puppets, film screenings, and a very special poetry reading with Rachel Eliza Griffiths.
The talented and popular performers of Mariachi Flor de Toloache, New York’s “first and only established female mariachi band,” return to the Garden along with the traditional dancers of Calpulli Danza Mexicana for a fun-filled weekend of live performances. Internationally-known Bronx artist Lucrecia Novoa joins the festivities with her larger-than-life Monarch Butterfly puppets. Break out your creative side and make your own flower crown inspired by Frida at this public workshop on the Conservatory lawn! At Shop in the Garden, watch women artisans from Oaxaca demonstrate their age-old techniques in weaving and embroidery.

We’re already looking towards a gorgeous autumn here at the Garden, with a whole new season of wonderful programs. The annual Edible Academy Family Picnic takes place on September 27, and this year’s exclusive benefit for the future of NYBG’s children’s organic vegetable gardening program will feature more activities and special guests than ever.

NYBG’s beloved Family Garden Picnic returns on Sunday, September 27, with organic gardening activities, delicious refreshments, and live cooking demonstrations for the whole family. This annual event benefits the Edible Academy at an afternoon of outdoor exploration and celebration in the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden, the centerpiece of the planned state-of-the-art facility that will become the hub of the expanded organic vegetable gardening program at NYBG.
NYBG has been a leader in organic vegetable gardening education for nearly 60 years. Become a part of this long-standing tradition by bringing the whole family for an exciting culinary adventure, live music, crafts, and a delicious picnic. Special guest Chef Carla Hall, co-host of ABC’s The Chew, will present a live cooking demonstration for guests. Hall will be joined by Chefs Andy Nusser of Tarry Lodge and Anthony Sasso of Casa Mono, two culinary talents from Mario Batali’s acclaimed restaurants. The summer season is at its height here at NYBG, with plenty of seasonal beauty appearing each week.
