The LuEsther T. Mertz Library’s new Humanities Institute will soon host its second symposium. NYBG has invited four experts in the field of human-impacted environments to share their thoughts this November 7 on The Changing Nature of Nature in Cities.
Next Friday, October 17, NYBG is taking over Vanderbilt Hall in Grand Central Terminal with a showstopping display of gargantuan gourds! Carve a little time out of your daily commute between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. to see Ray Villafane and his team begin their work on an impressive zombie carving. Ray Villafane is an Arizona-based sculptor best known for his highly detailed pumpkin carvings. A regular competitor on the Food Network, Villafane was recently a finalist on Halloween Wars.
The apocalyptic pumpkin sculpture will begin coming to life on October 17, but those who want to see the finished projects in all its bone-chilling glory will have to come to our Pumpkin Carving Weekend here at NYBG on October 18 & 19, when Ray will continue to lead festive demonstrations for visitors. The first weekend of Kiku: The Art of the Japanese Garden begins tomorrow, and to celebrate we have a full schedule of special programs. Come admire hundreds of meticulously trained kiku in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory and attend our special Kiku Poetry Reading with Chase Twichell; view demonstrations of Ikebana: The Art of Japanese Flower Arranging; and enjoying a delicious meal at our Japanese Pop-Up Restaurant. There are many ways to immerse yourself in the beautiful traditions of Japanese gardens.
At the same time, The Haunted Pumpkin Garden is continuing to fill the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden with spooky seasonal fun for the whole family. This weekend includes Halloween Parades and the chance to meet the Creepy Critters of Halloween! Kick off fall with NYBG this weekend at the Harvest Festival! Two days of music and activities will fill the Garden grounds to benefit the Edible Academy. Come enjoy games on Daffodil Hill, and work up an appetite for our array of specialty samplers and vendors of food, beer, and wine while our exciting lineup of Americana bands fills the air with music. For those who want the full VIP experience, special tickets are available for a live cooking demonstration by Mario Batali and his co-host from ABC’s The Chew, Carla Hall! Those who purchase tickets to Sunday’s Family Garden Picnic may even access a booksigning with Carla Hall or an exclusive reception hosted by Mario Batali—all to support NYBG’s children’s education hub, the Edible Academy.

Wednesday is Greenmarket day at NYBG, until 3 p.m. Our local vendors are back today with fresh fruits and vegetables, including many varieties of cherry and grape tomatoes! A little sweet, a little tart, and always refreshing, we tend to think of these little morsels as a summer staple. With October right around the corner, we found a recipe to share with you that explores their potential uses in autumn recipes.

The Greenmarket is back today, with fresh produce each week throughout the fall season. Today’s breakout star is certainly the apples, perhaps New York State’s most popular produce. Pick up the freshest local apples today while the Greenmarket is open until 3 p.m. To get you motivated, we have a a delicious fall recipe so sweet and delicious you will forget all about the words “pumpkin spice”—apple fritter rings!
