Antique Garden Furniture Fair: Antiques for the Garden and the Garden Room with Specialty Plant SaleNext weekend, NYBG is pleased to welcome back more than 30 established exhibitors from across the United States and Europe for the Antique Garden Furniture Fair, the country’s most renowned stage for authentic garden antiques and rarities. This year’s fair will run from April 24 through 26, displaying an expansive array of art and antiques for the home and garden alongside the ever-popular Specialty Plant Sale. Sourced by Shop in the Garden, a variety of shrubs and trees—including Japanese maples, Itoh peonies, and other perennials—will be available alongside annuals and herbs. The forecast for this weekend is sunny and mild, so we have plenty of walks and tours lined up to enhance your experience of the Garden, from the Ross Conifer Arboretum to the Native Plant Garden.

This Weekend: Celebrate Early Spring with Three Days of Family Programs!

NYBG crocus early springThis weekend, NYBG kicks off the spring blooming season with three days of Orchid Show programs, brisk walks, and interactive family fun! That’s right, we are open on Monday, April 6—so come celebrate the holiday and share the Garden with your loved ones!

Dig! Plant Grow! is back, just in time for kids to enjoy playing outside again, with a new session entitled Wake Up, Garden! The Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden is filled with interactive gardening fun, while in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden, Little Landscapes continues through Monday. Monday promises to be absolutely gorgeous, so we have two brisk walking tours scheduled to enhance your experience of the Native Plant Garden and the Thain Family Forest, the two areas of the Garden that best showcase the beauty of our region at all times of year. If You See One Movie On Earth Day, See This One

“An unsung American hero,” is how film director Carey Lundin describes landscape architect and pioneering conservationist, Jens Jensen (1860–1951), who rose from street sweeper to prolific city park designer amid Chicago’s steel industry boom. On Earth Day, April 22, the Garden’s Humanities Institute hosts the New York premiere of Lundin’s award-winning documentary, followed by a panel discussion exploring ways we can honor Jensen’s legacy. We sat down with Carey to hear more about the important man behind the film.

What inspired you to choose Jens Jensen as your subject matter?
I was born in Chicago and I love a great underdog man against the machine story, and I mean that two ways, both the political power machine and the rise of the machine age. Jensen fought for humanity against both.

The Orchid Show: ChandeliersOrchid Evenings kicked off last week, and the next of these popular evening events is this Saturday, March 14—and tickets are still available! Come enjoy the lingering sunset through the glass of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory. Admire The Orchid Show: Chandeliers alongside a live DJ with a cocktail in hand. The Pine Tree Cafe has a full bar and menu of snacks available for purchase while a live band sets the mood with Latin Jazz. Shop in the Garden will be open for those who wish to bring home an orchid or some orchid care products.

Tomorrow the Garden is also pleased to host a poetry reading by Deborah Landau, an award-winning poet whose selections adorn the Poetry Walk in the Perennial Garden during this year’s Orchid Show. Orchid Evenings Return to Warm Up Your Nights

The Orchid Show: ChandeliersFor the return of the Orchid Show, celebrating its 13th year with an expanded display of living chandeliers that fills the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, Orchid Evenings are back! The Garden’s Victorian glasshouse is bursting with color and fragrance, and you have nine opportunities to take in the dazzling array of orchids with cocktails, refreshments, and live entertainment.

On March 7, 14, 19, 21, 28, and April 4, 11, 17, and 18, guests at Orchid Evenings will enjoy the Garden after the sun sets. From 6:30 to 9 p.m., The Pine Tree Café will have beer, wine, cocktails, and snacks available for purchase alongside Latin Jazz served up by the Nick Russo Latin Trio. Each ticket includes one complimentary beer, wine, or cocktail, and each ticket specifies an entry time to experience The Orchid Show: Chandeliers in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory. Entry times for the Conservatory are at 6:30, 7, and 7:30 p.m., but once inside visitors are free to stay as long as they please to enjoy the spectacle of thousands of hanging orchids, the sound of live DJs, and a quick touch-up by one of Guerlain’s famed make-up artists.
