The grounds are looking spectacular this week beneath a fresh blanket of snow, and this weekend features two unique walking tours designed to enhance your experience of the season. The Tree Tour and the Landmarks Tour present two opportunities to take in NYBG’s gleaming winter landscape with the benefit of a Garden Guide.
Meanwhile, in the warmth of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, Wild Medicine in the Tropics continues its journey through the many remarkable medicinal plants of the rain forest. Get an in-depth look with NYBG’s award-winning app, Wild Medicine.
And next Tuesday we announce the first round of weekly winners in our Wild Medicine Photo Contest! The two categories are “Macro” (close-up) and “Sense of Place” (wide shot), upload your contributions to the NYBG Flickr Group Pool and join in the fun! You could be one of the Grand Prize winners to be awarded a seat in the NYBG Adult Education photography class of your choice. Starting tomorrow, visitors will enter the lush rain forest under glass at NYBG’s Enid A. Haupt Conservatory for Wild Medicine in the Tropics, an exhibition that explores the many medicinal plants in the Garden’s permanent collection. Enjoy the full experience with a guided tour, or at your own pace with NYBG’s award-winning app, Wild Medicine.
Saturday also marks the beginning of our Wild Medicine Photo Contest! Bring your camera to the Conservatory and take your best shot at capturing the many beautiful subjects within. The two categories are “Macro” (close-up) and “Sense of Place” (wide shot). Join our NYBG Flickr Group Pool to upload your contributions, and the weekly winners will be announced right here on Plant Talk. One winner in each category will be recognized each week—and for the Grand Prize at the end of the exhibition! Monday is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and the Garden will be open! Enjoy a well-deserved long weekend at NYBG, and catch the Holiday Train Show® in its final few days before it closes after January 19. The wintry fun continues in Ross Hall with the return of All Aboard with Thomas & Friends™ mini-performances, now through January 25!
This weekend is also the time to come admire the finest treasures of the LuEsther T. Mertz Library’s world-class collection in Flora Illustrata: A Celebration of Botanical Masterworks—there will be three tours scheduled to guide visitors through this exhibition highlighting the greatest botanical library in the Western Hemisphere.

Tomorrow afternoon, join us in welcoming former U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins to NYBG for a special reading of his most beloved works. Visitors to the Garden have enjoyed his poems that line the Holiday Poetry Walk, inspired by trains, winter, and New York. Tickets are still available, so plan your weekend at NYBG and come enjoy the Holiday Train Show alongside beautiful poetry.
The Holiday Train Show continues this weekend with holiday guides, live a cappella, and screenings of your favorite holiday- and train-related films. Other programs this weekend include a special in-depth tour of the latest exhibition in the LuEsther T. Mertz Library, Flora Illustrata: A Celebration of Botanical Masterworks. These treasures from the Library’s Rare Book and other Collections span centuries, so come explore botanical history with an expert guide. Or you can be an expert for a day and join professionals and aficionados alike for this Saturday’s Annual Winter Bird Count to learn about bird conservation and population health while observing the Garden’s birds. This Sunday afternoon is the first of our all-new Winter Harmonies Concert Series! “American Journey” is the title of this unique performance that draws from classical and folk music, so enhance your visit to the Garden this weekend with a special live performance of music selected especially for the Holiday Train Show®.
Music is just one of many ways to appreciate NYBG in wintertime this weekend. Holiday Guides in the Haupt Conservatory illuminate the meticulous work that go into re-creating over 150 landmarks for Holiday Train Show®. Meanwhile, on grounds, this weekend’s tour schedule includes an insightful look into the historic landmarks that make up NYBG. Of course, some of the oldest and most unique fixtures here are the trees, and the Winter Wonderland Tree tour brings visitors along for a closer look at the gorgeous winter landscape.
Finally, Bar Car Nights are back tonight and tomorrow, with tickets still available for tonight, but Saturday night is sold out. Read on for details regarding tonight’s entertainment, Sunday’s live music ensemble, and seasonal activities for kids.

Here’s to a happy Thanksgiving! As you tuck in to a hearty feast and a well-earned holiday, consider bringing your loved ones for some quality time at the Garden. NYBG will be open November 28, 29, and 30 with a full schedule of seasonal tours and special programs surrounding our 23rd annual Holiday Train Show®—including live a cappella singing and screenings of holiday- and train-themed films. Spend the day after Thanksgiving at NYBG and explore the grounds in all their winter splendor with two one-day-only tours. The Fruit & Berry Tree Tour will highlight the many beautiful berries of the season, and our Winter Tree Tour is best way to take in NYBG’s winter wonderland of conifers and more. For anyone on grounds today to enjoy the city’s first snowfall of the season, our film screening will feature Union Pacific (1939) in Ross Hall.
Don’t forget, there are still eight Bar Car Nights left this season! Last weekend’s kick-off was a great success, so get your tickets now before they sell out.

Tomorrow is the big day! At long last the Holiday Train Show, a New York Favorite, returns to NYBG. Over 150 plant-based replicas fill the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, including several new and updated landmarks! From dearly departed monuments to familiar favorites, these miniature models are suspended in time, criss-crossed by almost a quarter-mile of tracks. Tickets are reserved in advance, so check out our schedule of programs now and pick a day to enjoy this 23-year tradition with your family.

Tomorrow we kick off the new season of festivities with our Holiday Tree Lighting at 4 p.m., so don’t miss it if you’re planning to be hear toward sundown! And when you’re in the Conservatory, keep an eye out for replicas marked by a red label. These represent the many designated New York City Landmarks represented in this year’s Holiday Train Show as part of an exciting partnership with the NYC Landmarks50 Alliance to commemorate 50 years of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.
This weekend also marks the opening of two very unique exhibitions in the LuEsther T. Mertz Library. Flora Illustrata: A Celebration of Botanical Masterworks, in the Art Gallery, highlights many of the treasures from the Mertz Library’s unparalleled Rare Book Collection. Journey through botanical history as you admire books, manuscripts, maps, private letters, and art from around the world—some of which are on public display for the first time! In the Ross Gallery, NYBG is also proud to present Hudson Valley Seed Library: Art of the Heirloom, a display of art commissioned by the Hudson Valley Seed Library for a series of limited edition seed packets.

This weekend is the culmination of NYBG’s Fall Forest Weekends! Winter will be here before you know it, so don’t miss your chance to come and admire our stunning fall foliage while enjoying a wide variety of seasonal programs and activities. Take a canoe through New York City’s largest remaining tract of old-growth forest via the Bronx River, see live hawks and owls, and watch a master woodcarver at work—whose handiwork will be for sale in the Shop in the Garden!
Next weekend will be the debut of all of NYBG’s winter programs and exhibits, including the 23rd year of the Holiday Train Show, so be sure to reserve your tickets soon before your preferred date sells out! NYBG’s trees are at 90% of peak color, jumping from 60% on Wednesday! Our Foliage Tracker has been going haywire this week as leaf season arrives in full force, just in time for the first of our Fall Forest Weekends. Autumn at the NYBG is at its most dazzling right now, and we have a full lineup of exciting activities to complete your experience of the colorful and serene woods. See live birds of prey, watch a master woodcarver at work, and even paddle a canoe down the Bronx River as you admire the Thain Family Forest from the best possible vantage point.
