EUGLOSSINE BEES AND LECYTHIDACEAE

The distributions of euglossine bees and zygomorphic-flowered Lecythidaceae with nectar as a reward coincide, except in Jamaica where there are euglossines but no Lecythidaceae with this type of flower.

Upper left: Note the slit in the hind tibia of this male of a species of Eufriesea. The bees sequester the aromas in this slit.

Upper right: Note the long tongues of these two individuals of Eulaema.

Lower right: Note the individual of Eulaema being attracted to the wick impregnated with aromatic compounds held in the left hand of the entomologist, Anthony Raw.
