- Type specimen: Salamanca, Cataraugus Co. (NYS). This species lacks affinities with any other taxon or section presently accepted in Collybia. Peck mentioned that C. expallens had a distinctive farinaceous odor, and a delicately floccose stipe, and a watery brownish hygrophanous pileus. The spores are (4.2-)5.4-6.6 x 3.2-4.4 µm, smooth, hyaline, inamyloid, acyanophilous, lacrymoid or obovoid. Basidia are not siderophilous and hymenial cystidia are lacking. The pileipellis is interwoven with erect to repent, cylindric hyphae.
