This stipitate polypore is unusual in that it is annual and fleshy. It occurs under Picea in Europe and under conifers and other broad leaf trees in North America. It may form ectomycorrhizae with Quercus costaricensis in the Talamancas at one specific locality. This fungus was kindly identified by L. Ryvarden who places it in the Thelephoraceae.
