Photograph by R. E. Halling © 2003 voucher=REH8384
This species of Cortinarius can be characterized by the cinnabar red veil remnants on the stipe. Also, these areas will turn deep violet with application of KOH or NH4. The species appears rather commonly in the Cordillera Talamanca growing under Quercus. This mushroom superficially resembles C. bulliardii, but does not have lilac lamellae. Note the mycorrhizal root at the base of the stipe.
