Cortinarius carranzae Ammirati, Halling & Garnica
Photograph by R. E. Halling ©, 1996
This Cortinarius is widespread under Costa Rican oaks. Distinctive features include the ruby/garnet color of the pileus and lamellae, dry basidiomata, and subdistant to distant lamellae. While quite fibrous when fresh, it soon deteriorates in situ and becomes extremely fragile. This taxon is dedicated to Dr. Julieta Carranza, Univ. de Costa Rica.
