Widespread in eastern North America from where it was originally described, the southern distribution in the Western Hemisphere now reaches the southern Talamancas of Costa Rica near Parque La Amistad. It is a smaller representative of the genus in which the pileus surface is smooth (lacking scabrous fibrils). The orange to orange brown colors and venose (not truly lamellate) hymenophore are distinctive.
