This false morel is widely distributed in the northern Hemisphere. Likewise, it can be found scattered in oak forests throughout the Talamancas of Costa Rica at higher elevations (>2000 m). It can be found on dead wood or soil and is characterized by the twice or thrice uplifted and folded "cap" that often fuses to itself. The stipe is hollow, brittle and colored a dull pinkish flesh to pale brownish color.
