This is another of the taxa found in the Neotropical montane Quercus forests that is also found farther north to NE North America; it also has been found in the northern Andes of Colombia. The sordid colors, acrid taste, and a magenta macrochemical reaction to alkali are distinctive. Apparently L. atroviridis has restricted its mycorrhizal association to Quercus. We have found this taxon infrequently in the vicinity of Cerro de la Muerte in the Cordillera Talamanca.
