Macrocybe titans (Bigelow & Kimbrough) Pegler, Lodge, & Nakasone

Parataxonomist, Carolina Cano, holds a normal-sized basidioma of M. titans. This taxon was originally described from central Florida, USA (Mycotaxon 11: 425-429, 1980, as a Tricholoma) and has been found on a leaf cutter ant nest at Sector Santa Rosa of the Guanacaste Conservation Area. This large agaric is also known from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Martinique. The genus has just been recently recognized (Mycologia 90: 494-504. 1998) and is a pantropical, non-ectomycorrhizal entity.
