This species was described in 1991 (Beih. Nova Hedwigia 102: 53-55. 1991) based on collections from Mexico (Tamaulipas, Vercruz) and Costa Rica (Guanacaste). The SEM, below, is from a Colombian collection. Austroboletus subvirens was originally described from Japan and is somewhat similar but has a subviscid pileus and a yellowish stipe with an olive colored reticulum.
