Pulveroboletus ravenelii (Berk. & Curt.) Murrill
Photograph by R. E. Halling ©, 1996
This is the type species of the genus and seems to have a relictual distribution. It is known from eastern and western North America and south to Colombia, eastern Asia and south into Queensland, Australia. A dull red pileus surface under the sulphur yellow, pulverulent veil, a hymenophore that changes to blue on injury are distinctive. Collections of this bolete from Costa Rica tend to be smaller than those from North America (below left).
