This taxon was just "discovered" in Zona Protectora Las Tablas in July 1998. Rhodocybe umbrosa is an unusual new member of section Rhodocybe because of the somber brown colors, the obvious pseudocystidia and the small, pip-shaped, strongly ornamented basidiospores. Furthermore, the spores are often adaxially concave and appear slightly curved in profile view.
