Widespread in the north temperate zone, T. rutilans occurs on dead conifer wood. In Costa Rica, we suspect that this taxon is not native but has been introduced with exotic Pinaceae or Cupressaceae. We found it in a cypress plantation near native oak forests in the Cordillera Talamanca. The purplish red fibrils on the pileus and stipe and the yellow lamellae are diagnostic.
