This Cortinarius is the most widely distributed species in Costa Rica and the most common one in the Talamancas. The strong violet to purple coloration is accompanied by a brownish buff veil that thinly coats the cap surface and forms zones (sometimes indistinct) on the stipe surface. The spores are subglobose and distinctly ornamented.
