Originally described from Michigan, this taxon is widely distributed in the eastern USA where it occurs mainly with Fagaceae. The brown pileus and stipe (with fine to subcoarse reticulum and white base), unchanging white flesh are diagnostic. We have only just found this taxon in June 1997 under Quercus oleoides on Rincon de la Vieja in sector Santa Maria of the Guanacaste Conservation Area.
