This basidiomycetous truffle is actually a derived member of Lactarius and represents a new report for Costa Rica. It lacks any kind of peridium and produced a watery latex when cut open. A remnant of a stipe can be seen in the lower image. The amyloid spores have a low reticulate ornamentation. Dr. M. Castellano (pers. com.) kindly verified the identity of this truffle.
