Epiphytic shrub; stem terete, striate, glabrous; bark grayish, cracking longitudinally; twigs subterete, complanate and bluntly angled or strongly ribbed, glabrous; buds aristate, 4-5 mm log, puberulent. Leaves coriaceous, elliptic, (5.5-)10-16 x (3.2-)4-10 cm, base rounded, subcordate, apex obtuse to bluntly acute, margin slightly revolute, glabrous on both surfaces, weakly and minutely glandular-fimbriate above, the base beneath on each side of the midrib with one circular to oblong, concave, reddish gland ca. 0.2-0.4 mm long or in diam.; 3-5(-9)-plinerved from the base, midrib impressed above and conspicuously raised beneath, lateral nerves impressed above and raised beneath, or the inner 2 pairs of lateral nerves conspicuously raised above and beneath, the outer 2 pairs raised on both surfaces but inconspicuous and fading out within the proximal 1/3, reticulate veinlets usually raised and prominent on both surfaces; petiole subterete, flattened and sometimes canaliculate above, rugose, 4-6 mm long, puberulent, glabrate. Inflorescence solitary, axillary, often arising from older stems after the leaves have fallen, racemose, (5-)10-20-flowered, surrounded at the base by a series of ovate, acute, marginally glandular-fimbriate bracts, ca. 2-3 x 3 mm; rachis subterete, ribbed, striate, (1-)4-11 cm long, puberulent, scattered glandular-fimbriate, the lower 2-4 bracts sterile, the nodes ± swollen; floral bract narrowly ovate, acuminate, 3-6 x 1-2 mm, ciliate; pedicel subterete, striate, (16-)20-40 mm long, puberulent, weakly glandular-fimbriate; bracteoles located near the base, narrowly lanceolate to aristate, acuminate, 2-5 x 1 mm, ciliate. Flowers with calyx 8-10 mm long, glabrous, sparsely to densely glandular-fimbriate, strongly winged; hypanthium turbinate, 5-7 mm long; limb campanulate, 3-4 mm long; lobes narrowly triangular, acuminate, 2-3 mm long; sinuses rounded; corolla cylindric-urceolate, 18-20 mm long and 4-5 mm diam., the wings 2-3 mm broad, glabrous, weakly glandular-fimbriate, green turning greenish-purple (fide label), the lobes strongly reflexed and curling, narrowly deltate, acuminate, 4-6 mm long; stamen 15-18 mm long; filaments 1.8-2.5 mm long, glabrous or with few glandular-tipped hairs dorsally; anther 16-18 mm long; thecae 6-7 mm long, the base apiculate; tubules 9-11 mm long, dehiscing by elongate clefts 2-7 mm long; style ca. 18-21 mm long, glabrous; nectariferous disc annular-pulvinate, glabrous. Berry not seen.
Distribution. Endemic to Ecuador; premontane forest (mossy or elfin forest), at 900-1600 m altitude. Rare and endangered.
