To see what inspired the playful color and light of The Orchid Show: Mexican Modernism, be sure and stop by Ross Gallery for “Homage to Luis Barragán: An Act of Poetry.” 📸

Created by photographer @martirene_alcantara, the gallery display shares a look into the striking architecture of Barragán, a Mexican Modernist designer whose work in the 20th century centered vivid palettes and the ephemeral beauty of light and shadow. After 25 years photographing the architect’s work, Alcántara’s images provide an intimate look into his monumental creations.

This month, NYBG had the honor of hosting world-re

This month, NYBG had the honor of hosting world-renowned chefs and @UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors @maurocolagreco of @restaurantmirazur in Menton, France and @danielhumm of @elevenmadisonpark in New York City—both at the helm of celebrated three-Michelin-starred restaurants.

The two chefs united in New York City for a collaborative dinner series and to champion circular gastronomy—a forward-thinking culinary movement led by Mauro Colagreco that centers locally sourced ingredients, minimizing food waste, and optimizing resource efficiency. NYBG’s own work in sustainability initiatives and promoting healthy eating made it easy to see a potential partnership!

Chefs Colagreco and Humm explored the Garden’s collections and Edible Academy, delved into centuries of historical food literature at the Mertz Library, and engaged in meaningful discussions about potential collaborations with NYBG, alongside other visiting UNESCO representatives. We can’t wait to share what comes of this shared drive to educate people of all ages about the benefits of making informed food choices.

While we’re preparing the Haupt Conservatory for opening day on February 15, we’ve got THOUSANDS of orchids waiting for their big moment in the Nolen Greenhouses for Living Collections. And because The Orchid Show: Mexican Modernism runs through April 27, we need plenty of understudies on deck to tag in when the early orchids wind down their blooms.

Today marks the start of Black History Month, and

Today marks the start of Black History Month, and at NYBG we’re highlighting the important botanical legacies of the African Diaspora—here at the Garden and beyond.

Get to know some of the scientists, horticulturists, and gardeners throughout history who have been pioneering figures in plant science and agriculture, and learn about activists sharing the importance of Black contributions to our relationship with the natural world. We also invite you to look back at recent talks from NYBG that have illuminated the significant influences of Black foodways on the ways we eat in the Western Hemisphere.

2024 was a remarkable year for us here at NYBG, an

2024 was a remarkable year for us here at NYBG, and we’re especially proud of all we accomplished in the lab and in the field! 🌿🔬

To quantify some of our plant science efforts, our scientists discovered 36 new plant species, collaborated on projects in 79 countries around the world, and digitized over 150,000 plant specimens in our Steere Herbarium. From Spain, to Colombia, to the islands of the South Pacific, we applied our knowledge to tackle the climate crisis with plant-based solutions, and participated in the world’s most significant biodiversity conferences, joining with colleagues from near and far to protect our planet.

*Crunch, crunch, crunch* The sound of snow underfoot is the Garden’s soundtrack right now as we settle into the serenity of winter. 🌬❄️

It’s the time of year where the stillness asks you to stop a moment and soak it all in: squirrels bounding across the forest trails, sprinkles of snow falling from the evergreens, the rustle of bare branches overhead as birds go about their business. Now, when the city feels far away, is a great time to find a meditative moment or two. 🐿

Come stop by for the final day of the Holiday Train Show, then spend some time forgetting the frosty weather outside as you explore rain forests, deserts, and all the colorful blooms to be found among the greenery. The blue trumpet vines in the Aquatic House are really sounding off right now! 🎺
