Experience the Joys of Dyeing with Plants

September 28

12–3 p.m. | Off-site

Free Event

Textiles have been dyed with plants for millennia. It is an ancient practice, with a deep knowledge base that is maintained throughout the world. With love and respect for the plants and the people who have cultivated natural dyeing practices, together we will experience the joys of natural dyeing.

During this workshop participants will handle and learn about plant-based dyes, natural textiles, and how the dyes react to various PH modifiers. Each material reacts to natural dyes slightly differently based on its composition. We will see how five different textiles achieve different tones from the same dye and then explore how colors can shift with modifiers. Each participant will have the opportunity to create a unique piece to take home with them.

The free workshop is hosted by NYBG in partnership with Morning Glory Community Farm, and will be offered with Spanish translation by Jasmín Duran—a Morning Glory Garden member, community herbalist and educator, and avid learner of plants.

Rain date: September 29
