An arrangement of purple and orange tulips

The Tulip Garden: Polly Nicholson in Conversation with Lindsey Taylor

June 13, 2024

10:30–11:30 a.m. | Mertz Library

Polly Nicholson, an organic flower grower, holder of the National Collection of Tulipa (Historic), and owner of Bayntun Flowers in Wiltshire, UK, has cultivated a horticultural empire on her countryside estate, consisting of a series of walled gardens and a one-acre field dedicated to a variety of extinct flower varieties that once bloomed centuries ago.

In her newly released debut book, The Tulip Garden, Nicholson presents a beautifully illustrated tribute to one of the world’s most beloved blooms. An essential reference for tulip lovers, florists, and gardeners, The Tulip Garden combines the flower’s rich cultural history with practical advice for growing all types of tulips today—from wild, species tulips, old Dutch cultivars, and English Florists’ to the ever-popular annual garden tulips.

Nicholson will be joined by garden designer Lindsey Taylor for a conversation exploring her passion for tulips and how she has nurtured what’s grown into the largest private collection of historic varieties in the United Kingdom.
