About the Million Daffodil Initiative
Beginning November 2015 and continuing over the course of several years, one million new Narcissus bulbs will be added to the landscape of NYBG to create New York’s most extensive display of daffodils—a stunning four-acre floral spectacle that will herald the arrival of spring at the Garden each year.
This celebration of the Garden’s 125-year history will enhance and complement the existing plantings at Daffodil Hill, which date from the 1920s and include heirloom varieties no longer available in the nursery trade. Working closely with renowned bulb expert Brent Heath, we have developed an elegant design that features large masses of daffodils that naturalize well in our climate and soils. Some will be planted by hand while others will be planted using a special bulb-planting machine developed in Holland, placing 150,000 bulbs each fall until we’ve reached our million-strong goal.
