The finest night in floral design took over @theplazahotel Thursday evening as we celebrated The Orchid Dinner—and it was a party to remember. 🪩🌺

Nearly 40 designers took on the theme of this year’s Orchid Show, creating tablescapes in homage to Mexican Modernism that were playful, clever, complex, and bursting with color! This event is ALWAYS a good time, and between the cocktails, dinner, and the rhythm of the dance floor, our guests raised more money than EVER in support of NYBG’s programs in plant science, education, and horticulture.

Don’t worry, spring is closer than you think. Just ask the snowdrops. 🌱

In the Azalea Garden, Perennial Garden, and in spots throughout our 250 acres, you’ll find these February darlings starting to pop up and say hello (sometimes they show up a little early, but now’s their moment). Usually blooming into March, they close out winter ahead of spring’s big flower moment. They’re some of our favorite heralds of things to come!

Among the thousands of vibrant flowers on view in The Orchid Show: Mexican Modernism, you’ll find unique species representing Mexico’s sheer biodiversity. 🌿🌴

Including native plants in the genera Oncidium, Epidendrum, and Rhynchostele, to name a few, these orchids’ blooms range from flamboyant red flowers to tiny white inflorescences you’ll need to get up close to see. They’re a perfect example of just how diverse Orchidaceae—the second largest plant family on Earth—can be, whether the plants grow on the ground or up among the tree branches.

To see what inspired the playful color and light of The Orchid Show: Mexican Modernism, be sure and stop by Ross Gallery for “Homage to Luis Barragán: An Act of Poetry.” 📸

Created by photographer @martirene_alcantara, the gallery display shares a look into the striking architecture of Barragán, a Mexican Modernist designer whose work in the 20th century centered vivid palettes and the ephemeral beauty of light and shadow. After 25 years photographing the architect’s work, Alcántara’s images provide an intimate look into his monumental creations.

This month, NYBG had the honor of hosting world-re

This month, NYBG had the honor of hosting world-renowned chefs and @UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors @maurocolagreco of @restaurantmirazur in Menton, France and @danielhumm of @elevenmadisonpark in New York City—both at the helm of celebrated three-Michelin-starred restaurants.

The two chefs united in New York City for a collaborative dinner series and to champion circular gastronomy—a forward-thinking culinary movement led by Mauro Colagreco that centers locally sourced ingredients, minimizing food waste, and optimizing resource efficiency. NYBG’s own work in sustainability initiatives and promoting healthy eating made it easy to see a potential partnership!

Chefs Colagreco and Humm explored the Garden’s collections and Edible Academy, delved into centuries of historical food literature at the Mertz Library, and engaged in meaningful discussions about potential collaborations with NYBG, alongside other visiting UNESCO representatives. We can’t wait to share what comes of this shared drive to educate people of all ages about the benefits of making informed food choices.
