Jade Johnson and Emely Mendez were honored at the annual fundraiser for the American Society of Landscape Architecture New York.

Emely Mendez’s commitment to the environment and sustainability started in high school, thanks to a partnership between GEAR UP at the Bronx Institute at Lehman College, and the GreenSchool at NYBG. Now a junior at the Climate School at Columbia University, Emely was recently honored along with Jade Johnson, NYBG’s Manager of Volunteer Services, for their dedication to children’s education and environmental advocacy at the American Society of Landscape Architecture New York (ASLA-NY) annual fundraiser.

On Saturdays and school recesses Emely engaged in Children’s Education programs across our campus, discovering career and college pathways from Garden professionals in the field:

Her journey is a testament to how mission-driven, multi-session programs cultivate the next generation of stewards.

GreenSchool also partnered with ASLA-NY and Capital Projects colleagues to create programs introducing students from underrepresented communities to careers in landscape architecture. Learn more about these initiatives:

The impact of these initiatives extends beyond the students. Current NYBG colleagues who worked directly with Emely, such as Caryn Hummell, Coordinator of Urban Advantage; and Kirsten Sheppard, Edible Academy Educator; as well as former GEAR UP program educators like Shannon Valdes, Associate Director of Professional Learning; Arvolyn Hill, Associate Director of ECAG; and Charlotte Smith, Coordinator of the Explainer Program, have seen their career paths take hold at the Garden. Through their design of garden curriculum for GEAR UP as seasonal educators, they’ve excelled here at NYBG.

Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is an initiative to increase academic performance and college and career readiness for middle through high school students from underserved communities. One of its fundamental tenets to college and career readiness is the importance of students’ first-hand exposure to a variety of career paths.

The goal of The Education Committee of the American Society of Landscape Architects New York Chapter (ASLA-NY) is to connect Landscape Architecture as a career path to young people from underrepresented communities through mentorship and outreach programs.
