Where do I begin with my experience working as a Bronx Green-Up Apprentice? My year with the program was amazing, from feeding baby cows upstate at Iridescent Earth Collective to holding a one-legged chicken at Garden of Happiness. I’ve been able to expand my knowledge of horticulture, arboriculture, compost, community outreach, and more, thanks to the amazing team at Bronx Green-up and members of Bronx Community Gardens.

In Summer 2023, the Summer Youth Employment Program students at Morris Campus Farm were given a unique opportunity to do a six-week program in order to get a Grow More Veggies Certification. During this program, I was able to lead my first-ever workshops with the students. I led a seeding activity, and although I was nervous, it felt like second nature being able to have the students engage and have a clear grasp of their attention. As the weeks went on, their seedlings grew, as did their knowledge of plants. By the end of the program, they all completed the Grow More Veggies Certification. I was incredibly grateful to share my knowledge with the youth and to learn from their many different cultural backgrounds.

Most of my Fridays were spent at Karol’s Community Urban Farm. Karol’s is a farm on NYCHA property in its second growing season, cared for by residents of the Castle Hill area, volunteers, and Bronx Green-Up staff (specifically Che Cooper). The tasks of the day consist of transplanting, harvesting, seeding, watering, weeding, weighing produce, and hosting farm stands for the Castle Hill community members.

My favorite crop to harvest was collard greens, not only because of the snap it makes when harvested but also due to the benefits that come along with the crop. Collard greens have been associated with cancer prevention, detox support, anti-inflammatory properties, heart health, and digestive support. We were able to harvest over 2,000 pounds of produce, and we had everything from collard greens to watermelons. Yes, I said watermelon y’all. I will forever cherish the beauty of the farm and my experience with the residents of Castle Hill.

Overall my experience working with Bronx Green-Up has been one of the highlights of my career in becoming a farmer. Who knows, maybe the next time you see me I’ll be on my farm, preferably in Puerto Rico, with a bunch of cows and chickens running around as I harvest food para Mi Gente.
