Systematics of Symplocos
Lawrence M. Kelly
Symplocos consists of 318 species of trees and shrubs that primarily grow in montane habitats. The genus is divided between America and Asia, with slightly more species in Asia. The purpose of this ongoing project is to produce taxonomic revisions of the American species of Symplocos for selected areas. Floristic treatments and revisions have been produced for the Flora of Chiapas, Flora Mesoamericana, and the Mexican and Central American members of the genus. The project is a collaborative effort with colleagues at the California Academy of Sciences, with the goal of producing a monograph of the neotropical species of Symplocos.
