CROSS SECTION OF THE SEED COAT OF
COUROUPITA GUIANENSIS

Exotestal cells (EX) are prolonged into trichomes 4-5 mm long.

All species of Couroupita possess this feature and no other species of Lecythidaceae have it.

My colleague, Chih-Hua Tsou, and I hypothesize that the trichomes facilitate seed passage through the digestive tracts of peccaries.

Once again we see how see anatomy is related to dispersal biology.
